Staying Centered in Cities

Staying centered on a trip is important. Whether it’s for business or pleasure, taking time out, or getting a little quiet time, down time, or me-time, can make all the difference to the quality of that vacation, conference or meeting.

Cities are so often overwhelming that it’s worth making note of all the quiet places in the vicinity you’ll be traveling to. There’s a reason cities are referred to as ‘the urban jungle’. Noise, smoke, speed, and hustle are all things you may need to get away from in order to keep yourself composed and level-headed.

If things really get too bad, then you can always head to one of the dayuse hotels via daybreakhotels.com that’s available in bigger cities. These allow you to book a room for just an hour or two, so you can clear your head. You can even snooze, shower, or swim - whatever it takes to re-enter the urban jungle refreshed and regenerated.

Staying centered can involve taking time out, but also a change of pace and scenery to a more natural setting can be very beneficial. Look out for large parks in the city you are visiting. Nature is proven to have a calming effect, and natural sounds such as fountains or birdsong can be extremely soothing.

Cities are also full of places of worship. Quite often, these won’t be conducting a service, meaning that you are able to go inside for a while. Churches, mosques, and interfaith centers are all perfect places to calm your nerves and recenter yourself in peaceful surroundings.

Self-soothing techniques such as focusing on the breath can also be very effective. If you’re feeling anxious, then bringing your attention to the breath can take your attention away from these thoughts and feelings and bring you more fully into the present movement. If you can’t get to a day hotel, park, or church, then this is a remedy you can literally always carry with you, and practice at any time.

Staying centered means remaining calm and ‘in yourself’ when so many things are trying to unsettle you and pull you out of yourself. It can be difficult to keep centered, but it’s not impossible. And, as with most things, the more you practice, the more you will remain calm and centered no matter the city or situation.
